Naming System around the World

CATALOGUE: Culture

LOCATION: around Variland

DESCRIPTION:

Each of the land in Variland has their own distinct rule for their name. Be it the position of their family name, the amount of their names or the origin of their name. In some cases they bear a simple pronounciation, in other cases it’s too mouthful to be spoken that the Varrs make a joke of it. Most of the origin of the naming system is unknown — the Varrs assume that they came from the Unknown Ancestors. However, in some nmes, they carry meaning which people can track the history easily. In one land, carrying a certain name is a common rule of the land because of its benefit to the society.

TYPE:

Qabuti

Qabuti is a land where all people carry one single name except the one from the kingdom bloodline — here they refer the kingdom family as ‘noble-born’, whereas outside of the bloodline as ‘commoner’. All commoners carry one single name. To refer a commoner their origin, the Qabu will add their birthtown/-village as their family name. This rule only applies in Qabuti.

Example:

  • Ferdian of Batama: a commoner who comes from Batama Village

  • Mentari of Tuba: someone who comes from Tuba Island

  • Aditira Baruwija: a noble-born from the kingdom family of Baruwija Heir

  • Santi of Baldekhi: someone who comes from the city of Baldekhi, Mara

Mara

Mara naming system puts the family name first, following their second name (except for the case with Barunaqua Heir, the citizens from Baldekhi and the Migrants). Second name are referred between family, friends and closed comrades. In formal setting, the Mara refer each other in their family name. In a case among the Maralin, additional second name is necessary to be added to prevent confusion.

  1. The Natives, common folks

There’s a strong distinction to differentiate the Native Mara who carries the noble bloodline — being referred as the Maralin — and the non-noble one. Every non-Maralin Native only contains three letters in their family name, whereas the Maralin don’t share such trait. There are thirteen different family names existing among Maralin. All family name is gained from their parent.

    Example:

    • Nam Hinagiku: a non-Maralin Native

    • Fuzuwari Keikashi: a Maralin Native coming from Fuzuwa Heir

    • Jun Mito: a non-Maralin Native

    • Jianinka Kushina: a Maralin Native coming from Jianin Heir

    • Dongsanji Ritsu: a Maralin Native coming from Dongsan Heir

  2. The Natives from Baldekhi

Baldekhi is a city located in the northeasternmost of Mara, the last city before reaching Ikrav territory. Due to their history with the Qabu, and having closest contact to the Ikv, not only they have different physical appearance unlike the common Natives, but also different naming system. It shares the same rule as in Qabuti; most of the people only possess one name except if they carry bloodline from Barunaqua Heir.

Therefore, the one who only possesses one name is usually added ‘-kaan’ after their name as their family name (kaan : ‘name’ in Modern Mara). This also applies to the Migrants with one single name.

    Example:

    • Adrian Adrikaan: a Baldekh

    • Fhuu Barunaqua: a Baldekh coming from Barunaqua Heir

    • Jaka Jakakaan: a Qabu when being referred in Mara.

ADDITIONAL NOTE (1):

The Mara naming system with the additional -kaan also applies to the rest of the world except Qabuti.

Ikrav

The Ikv get their family name from their parent. An additional el or ul between the first and family name is the main distinction of Ikv naming system. The addition el is for men, whereas ul for women.

The Ikv from Rayjar however carry the same family name: “Rajirr”.

Example:

  • Mayya ul Navqi: a female Ikv

  • Ghafran el Fajr: a male Ikv

  • Kellan el Rajirr: a male Ikv from the city of Rayjar

ADDITIONAL NOTE (2):

It is unknown about the origin of the family name in the first place except that it’s hereditary from the generations above. This case is also shared by the naming system in Raesphyros and Border Nos.

Raesphyros

The Rae also get their family name from their parent. The main distinction in Rae naming system lays in the ending of -in and -ov in the end of their family name. The ending -ov is for men, -in for women.

The Rae from the Tovo cary “Tovo” as their family name, because among the secluded community, they only possess one single name.

Example:

  • Nikolay Moranichov: a male Rae

  • Sofia Aleksenin: a female Rae

  • Zerlina Tovonin: a female Rae from the Tovo

ADDITIONAL NOTE (3):

Some of the Rae carry either the family name with the ending of ‘ch’ or ‘n’. The Rae speculate that the one with ‘ch’ was originated from Southern Raesphyros, whereas ‘n’ from the Northern. However, the Rae with those name endings spread equally around the land, which more names end with ‘n’ than with ‘ch’.

Border Nos

The main distinction of Border Calix naming system lays in the ending of -czelsk. A joke among the Varrs regarding of Border Calix family name says that people never bother to refer them in family name due to the impossibility to be spoken. The Border Calixes get their family name from their parent, and the difference of the name in genders also applies. Men carry the ending -czelsk, while women -czelska.

Example:

  • Alan Svericzelsk: a male Border Calix

  • Faenja Svericzelska: a female Border Calix

ADDITIONAL NOTE (4):

Regardless whether in formal or informal setting, the Rae and the Border Calixes refer each other in their first name (except in the government guild Federation of Order). The Ikv share the rule like Mara; in formal setting, they refer each other in family name.

Northern & Central Nos

The westernmost side of Variland has their own otherworldly culture when it comes to naming system. First, the term of ‘callname’. Callname is a “third name” that is used as their main name, be in informal or formal setting. The possession of callname applies after the Varrs gain Aurabreath in the age of 10 and join guild for their first Badge, or take mentorship. Callname is mostly chosen by the owner themselves (which in rare case, a second party can be involved). And they can choose anything as their callname. Literally ANYTHING.

According to the Calixes from the Northern and the Central, the usage of callname was originated from their communication device i.e. radio telephone. Radio telephone is common for all citizens in Northern and Central Nos, and referring each other in callname instead of first of family name (especially Northern Calix family name is also as mouthful as Border Calix one) leads to clearness and simplicity. Especially among the government guild, such as building plumbing system or Syr’ana Glacier expedition in the case of Northern Nos, or maintaining War of Preserverance in the case of Central Nos.

Second, the family name is gained by the first name of their parent. In Northern Nos, the ending -sonne or -dotter (‘son’ and ‘daughter’ in Northern Calix) is added, which -sonne for men and -dotter for women. In Central Nos, the family name is added by the letter ‘s’, and it applies for both men and women.

Example:

  • Richelle Scarlets ‘Ree’: a Central Calix whose mother is named Scarlet, referring her callname as Ree

  • Eiszla Axeldotter ‘Ash’: a Northern Calix, daughter of a father named Axel, referring her callname as Ash

  • Theodore Roberts ‘T’farr’: a Central Calix whose father is named Robert, referring his callname as T’farr

ADDITIONAL NOTE (5):

The Northern and Central Calixes only refer each other in first name toward family members, closed friends and lovers. In Frozeneye Community, it also applies between comrades, educators and apprentices.
